The MASK Program: Mid-South Arts Safehaven for Kids

Our goal is to help under-served children and youth develop and/or improve their communication, public speaking and leadership skills; build and/or improve their self-esteem and self-confidence; and practice discipline. We use theatre arts as our foundation and we plan for all of our participants to gain an enhanced appreciation for the cultural arts by the end of the program. Although we use theatre arts as our foundation, our focus is not on creating actors. Rather, we focus on individual self-improvement and self-esteem building by enabling children to analyze problems they encounter in life and to discover practical solutions to deal with them. We believe that all children have untapped potential; and providing a strong foundation is the first step in unleashing that potential. Our goal is to help provide that foundation.

Our curriculum is designed to achieve our goals. Students will be taught with age appropriate contemporary materials dealing with real life issues affecting today’s youth: consequences of their choices, school violence, accepting responsibility, bullying, self-esteem, sibling rivalry, internet relationships, patriotism and many other issues. All of our students will learn the evolution of theatre arts and will attend at least one theatrical performance. The program lasts throughout the school year concluding in May with a public performance by the MASK children and youth.
